The first week of this class is the Fall Basic skills week long intensive.

We will be doing general skills such as fire making, primitive tools, shelter, etc that are part of our daily lives. (see Fall Basic skills)

After a few days break we will start the processes of creating a simple wooden bow from a living tree.

Bow wood options

Stave selection

Roughing out

As the days shorten, we will take the time to explore the land and the surrounding nature;

tracking

fire making

horse working

animal processing

and various other activities that present themselves for the season.

The community room and workshop will be our cozy place for the evenings and crafting sessions.

Although we will be using metal hand tools there is always an emphasis on how to do things using Stone Age technologies.

We will also make stone, bone and blunt tipped arrows.

  • Arrow woods

  • Feather fletching

  • Flint knapping

  • Stone, bone and target tips

  • Finger tabs

When the roughed out staves have had time to season we will take them through to the finished bow.

  • Tillering sticks

  • Tillering methods

  • Recurving

  • Strings

  • String silencers

There is a lot to do in this class so it helps if you have some experience with wood working. You will need to bring a (very sharp) small wood working axe and knife.

The classes will be on a formal 5 days on, 5 days off schedule. During the “off” days you may continue working on the techniques learned during the class. Hunting weapons are optional for the Stone Age Project gear requirements.

During the month we will become a small clan and find that there are many more secrets to unravel in community!
